Summer Learning Journey - Day 1 / Week 1 / Activity 1

Te Ika-a-Māui

For this activity I have just landed in New Zealand. I went on this link and it will take me to a website I could read all about the story Maui and the giant fish. After reading this I found 3 interesting facts about this story.

1 - Maui would always get angry when the brothers won't let him go fishing with them.

2 - Maui's ancestor Murirangawhenua gave Maui a jawbone.

3 - Beacause the brothers were so greedy this story has been a part of Aotearoa.

  1. Hi Savelina,

My name's Ruby and I'm one of the people who will be blogging with you this summer as part of the Summer Learning Journey. It's great to see that you've made a start on these activities. Well done!

Great facts about Maui! I particularly like how you have added fact 3, talking about how because his brothers carved gullies out of the fish, Aotearoa's North Island was changed. His brothers were greedy and mean in this story, weren't they! Why do you think they were so mean to Maui?

Have you read any other stories about Maui? There is a very good one about how he brought fire to the world. If you would like to read it, here is the link: http://eng.mataurangamaori.tki.org.nz/Support-materials/Te-Reo-Maori/Maori-Myths-Legends-and-Contemporary-Stories/How-Maui-brought-fire-to-the-world

Let me know what you think!
    Cheers,
    Ruby.

  2. Hi Savelina,
I also foudn it interesting that if Mauis brothers hadn't have been greedy, we wouldn't have all the beautiful mountains and valley we have today.

    Keep it up

  3. Hello Savelina
Well done on finishing the first summer learning journey activity. You did a great job - all your facts about Maui are awesome. I wonder where Maui's ancestor (Murirangawhenua) got the jawbone from. Keep up the amazing work Savelina!
